Dancing Cows and My Top 5 Seasonal Transition Tips

Have you ever wondered where the phrase "dancing cows" comes from?

When the farmer lets the cows out of the barn after a long Winter, they dance!

They buck, they moo, they roll in the dirt.  Boy, were they happy to see that grass!

Spring makes us want to dance -- the joy of the colors, the warmer air and fragrance on the breeze.  Even if it's not yet Spring where you are, it is coming!

This month, My Style Suites Group Class is shopping their own closets.  They know what their vision for their Personal Style is now -- we've co-created that.

Their next task is to learn how to style their existing pieces so they have looks they love -- and see if they can use what they have to start putting their new personal style into action.

You can do this, too, when you bring your Spring clothing out from storage and put away your Winter looks.  For inspiration, watch my video, "Top 5 Transition Tips for Spring"!

PRO TIP:  Keep a few warmer pieces for those chilly, rainy days and make use of your scarves to variegate your temperature.  You'll find your wardrobe is the most full during seasonal transition.

Enjoy!

"You're A New Song"

If you had to choose a theme song for your upcoming year, what would it be?

At New Year's, my friend and marketing guru, Janet Wallace, asks herself this question each year.  As part of her Life As You Climb Corps, she asked our group to name ours.

The answer came quickly for me:  "You're a New Song" by Warpaint.

Warpaint at Primavera 2014

When Warpaint came on stage at Primavera Sound, I cheered, having fallen in love with the band the minute I heard them on the festival's playlist.

They greeted us from the big stage, as we stood under the fading blue of the Barcelona sky, and proceeded to wow the crowd -- not with sparkles or pop, but with deep musicality, nether-worldly vocals  and excellent grooves.

They are insouciant, joyful, fun -- standing in their power.

My kind of women!

Warpaint in RockTotal

In this video, they are dancing and singing through my New York -- the Village and the Lower East Side.

Singing and dancing, mugging for the camera, the video is a celebration of female friendship.  The song is a celebration of female empowerment and encouragement.

I am reminded of my younger self, carefree and not a little silly.

This is exactly the song I want to sing to you.

"You're a new song, baby!  You're a new song.  You're a new song -- to me."

I'm here to encourage you and empower you to step forward into your purpose.  And because I know you can do it and I want to hear your voice, you're a new song -- to me.

What's your theme song going to be this year?

#WhyIMarch

#WhyIMarch

I march for my daughter -- and my son. I march for the 35% of women worldwide who are the survivors of sexual abuse. I am one and I cannot stand by and do nothing as someone who bragged about sexual abuse ascends to our highest office.

As the pre-eminent Corinne Dettmeijer said at #DareToBeAGirl last night, "People think of violence against women as a woman's problem. If most victims are women, and most sexual predators are men, is it not a man's problem? No -- it is both".

Maja Groff, who also works tirelessly on these issues for The Hague Conference, quoted Martin Luther King, Jr, saying, "Power without love is reckless and abusive."

I march for the power of love -- I hope you will join me tomorrow as we stand up worldwide, step forward and march for women's rights everywhere.

Here's what Olga had to say about her experience in the program:

While doing the Style Suite Session Group Class I had a very stressful full time job, was volunteering in two different organisations, not to mention the general household and family duties that we all have... So, pretty busy! However...just from 1 hour per month session (which is really not a lot of time, no matter how busy you are) I learned to how spend LESS time on shopping and choosing my clothes! Also, because in the class we learn how to organize our wardrobe, I ended up spending LESS time on cleaning and had MORE time to do fun things or errands. Also, looking good and feeling confident automatically reduced my stress level, which made me feel like I had MORE time to do things I wanted to do, even with a super-busy schedule!

You've Got This!

Did you know you are NINE times more likely to succeed if you write your goals down?  That's right -- 9x more likely to succeed!  That's incredible!!

When I came across this factoid, I knew I had to share it with you -- because it's so easy, it means you've totally got this!

SETTING YOUR GOALS FOR 2017:

From Graffical Muse

Write whatever comes to mind -- dreams, fantasies or things you already know you are going to do.

Some goals could be stretch goals.  Increase what you think you can do by 4%.

Some could be wild & crazy.  You never know until you try!

Some goals could be easily achieved -- it doesn't mean you won't be happy when you get them done!

Once you've written down your goals, try to sketch out what you need to do to achieve them.  If you're already working on them, acknowledge the accomplishments you've made!

Just knowing the first step will make taking it 100% easier to take the first step.

I did this last year and met every. single. goal.

It's not that I'm smarter or more organized than you.  I simply wrote my goals down, which made it easier for me to focus on them.  I put them up where I could see them and kept track of my progress every week with my eye to these goals.

It totally worked for me, so I'm definitely doing this again in 2017!  Why not try it for yourself?

Here's how it works. I keep my goals to three to keep it easy to manage.  I make them broad, but commit to specific actions.  I acknowledge the progress I've already made, which allows me to think up the next step.

These are my goals, first steps and accomplishments so far:

  • to embolden ambitious women to use the power of personal style
    •  speak live every other month
      • 4 speaking engagements already booked!
  • to sell my book proposal
    • re-vamp my website
      • proposals received from 4 vendors!
  • to enroll 5 women in my Spring/Summer Style Suites Group mastermind
    • keep reaching out and inviting you in
      • great engagement for December launch

Write Down Your Goals.  If you take a moment to write your goals down, I'm sure you'll discover you're well on your way to achieving them.  Once you write them down, post them where you can see them.  It will help you remain accountable to yourself.

Then, set aside a time at the end of the week to check in with yourself.  All you need is 15 minutes to keep track of where you are and celebrate what you've already done!

I know you can do it.  I know it works.  Let's make 2017 amazing!

You've got this!

Your Presence Is Your Present

Vintage DO:  Enjoy this reprise during this holiday season!

Found on sarie.com

How do you light up a room?  What is your gift?

Do you tell funny stories?  Or are you a great listener?  Are you the one who pitches in and helps the host?  Or do you sit down on the floor and play with the kids?

Whatever it is that YOU bring to the table, now is the time.

During the holidays, everyone gets stressed.  There's a lot of excitement -- to be sure -- but all that excitement taxes the nervous system as well.

Consider your gift.  Name it.  Honor it.  Hold it up; it's yours!

How can you best give your gift this holiday?

One of my gifts is showing up.  I love festive occasions, cocktail parties and intimate dinners -- and always have a great party outfit at the ready!

However, all these late nights take their toll on me.  I use my napitation (nap + meditation) technique to rest & restore quickly.  But, it's not quite enough.  We need to set aside the holidays to truly rest and refresh ourselves -- body, mind and spirit.

I know it's possible to take good care of yourself if you make it a priority.

For me, sleep is number one.  One of the things I love about taking holidays with my kids is going to sleep right after they do.  I insist that they get ten hours and when we're on holiday, I get to, too!

Two, we stay put for Christmas.  As a family, we've realized Christmas at home with just us is just what we need!

Three, we go away to a winter wonderland after Christmas.  Whether it's skiing, ice skating, or (this year) horse riding in the snow, I love the mountains in the Winter, covered with snow.

What can you do for yourself this holiday?  What helps you re-charge?  Write it down and set a goal for yourself for the next two weeks.  It'll increase your chances of success by 9x!

Let's make this the best holiday ever!  Bring the gift of your presence to your holiday.

Happy Holidays!!
